COLUMBIA, S.C. – At last week’s football game versus Texas A&M, the University recognized Lieutenant Colonel James Karcanes as part of the CAE Military Family of the Game. A native of Warsaw, N.Y., he came to the South Carolina on a track and cross country scholarship in 1989.
He attended and competed for the Gamecocks from 1989 to 1992. To this day, he still holds the 10th fastest time in Carolina history in the 5,000 meters at 14:41.90, which was set in 1991.
In January, Karcanes will reach his 20-year anniversary with the United States Army. Last month, he returned from deployment in Iraq, his third combat tour in the country. Karcanes is currently stationed at Fort Jackson.
