BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – South Carolina cross country runner Monica York was selected as this week’s Southeastern Conference Women’s Freshman Runner of the Week, the conference announced today.

The native of DeKalb, Ill., earned the nod after earning her first-career win at the USC Open #2 on Oct. 8 with an SEC top-20 two-mile time of 11:53.95. The freshman defeated 41 other athletes in the race after running a personal best 6K time at the Paul Short Invitational just five days prior.

York has steadily progressed throughout the season, dropping her 6K time nearly 45 seconds a week a part, before winning the two-mile race just days later.

York and her teammates will head to Tuscaloosa, Ala., on Oct. 17 for the team’s final tune-up before the SEC Championships on Oct. 31 at Alabama.
