VOTE FOR SABRINA: SeniorCLASSAward.com | Senior CLASS Award Facebook Page

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – South Carolina senior goalkeeper Sabrina D’Angelo has been selected as one of 10 finalists for the 2014 Senior CLASS Award for women’s soccer, presented to student-athletes who excel both on and off the field. Candidates are choses based on their dedication and achievement in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition.

An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School® , the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.

The finalists were chosen by a media committee from the list of 30 women’s candidates announced in September. Nationwide fan voting begins immediately to help select the winner. Fans are encouraged to vote on the Senior CLASS Award website through November 24. Fan votes will be combined with media and Division I head coaches’ votes to determine the winner. The Senior CLASS Award winners will be announced during the 2014 NCAA Men’s and Women’s College Cup® championships in December.

An exercise and sports science major, D’Angelo has been a mainstay on the SEC Academic Honor Roll and earned National Soccer Coaches Association of American (NSCAA) First-Team Scholar All-America accolades last season. A strong leader on the team, D’Angelo has been an integral part of two of the three best seasons in Gamecock history. A two-time SEC Defensive Player of the Year, the Welland, Ontario, native became the program’s first MAC Hermann Trophy semifinalist last year and is one of four 2013 semifinalists to be named to the 2014 Watch List. The netminder frequents local camps and clinics and stays after each home match to sign autographs for fans. She has also logged community service hours at the Ronald McDonald House and local hospitals.

This season, D’Angelo has captained one of the best defenses in the country yet again. Allowing just 0.504 goals per game, D’Angelo ranks 15th nationally in goals against average. The goalkeeper has allowed just eight goals all season and has helped the Gamecocks to nine shutouts in 16 matches. No other SEC team has allowed less than 12 goals and South Carolina is one of 14 teams in the nation to allow eight goals or less.

The last Gamecock finalist for the women’s soccer Senior CLASS Award was Blakely Mattern in 2009.
