CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Members of the South Carolina women’s basketball team joined their SEC rivals at the SEC Network studios in Charlotte for SEC Media Day on Tuesday. Senior Aleighsa Welch and junior Tiffany Mitchell traveled with head coach Dawn Staley to spend the day in Charlotte working with SEC Network and ESPN on-air talent as well as other media to preview the season and shoot segments fans will see on game broadcasts throughout the season.

The day began with a breakfast discussion for the student-athletes, during which former student-athletes talked about their professional paths to television work, athletics administration and refereeing. The current crop of the SEC’s elite were encouraged to ask questions, which often centered around the challenges of transitioning from being a basketball player to another profession.

The Gamecocks stayed at the SEC Network studios throughout the morning to record various interviews and segments the Network will use during the season to enhance its broadcasts and coverage of women’s basketball. Staley explained the nuances of one of her team’s frequently run plays with analyst Debbie Antonelli. Mitchell and Welch got on an outdoor court with ESPN analysts Kara Lawson and Carolyn Peck to give fans an insight into what each player is thinking at critical moments during a game. Later, the two Gamecocks especially enjoyed a social media segment that ended in each drawing a picture of Cocky (see media-icon-photogallery.gif photo gallery for results) – and a lot of laughter. The morning’s schedule also included a photo shoot and an interview with Sirius XM Radio.

After lunch, everyone moved to the Ballantyne Hotel to meet with other networks that will air SEC games this season, shoot promos for the SEC Tournament and meet with other media members attending the event. The media turnout for the Gamecocks was reportedly the largest of the day.

Completing SEC Media Day allowed the Gamecocks to check off one more step toward playing their first game of the season. South Carolina will host Coker in an exhibition game on Sun., Nov. 2, at 3 p.m. before launching their final preparations for the season opener against Southern Cal on Sat., Nov. 15, at Colonial Life Arena.

Season tickets are available for $50 each for a reserved seat or a Family Four-Pack of four general admission tickets for $100. Visit www.GameocksOnline.com/tickets or call 1-800-4SC-FANS to purchase season tickets.
