The South Carolina softball team swapped opponents for its scheduled Feb. 25 game at 6 p.m. at Carolina Softball Stadium at Beckham Field. After Coppin State had its trip canceled to Columbia, Western Carolina stepped up to fill in the spot.

It will be the Catamounts’ fourth trip to Columbia, a series in which the Gamecocks own a 4-0 advantage. Last season, South Carolina swept a doubleheader from Western Carolina, winning the contests 6-3 and 5-0.

This change keeps the Gamecocks at the 56-game maximum for regular-season contests under NCAA Division I rules for softball.

That Wednesday game kicks off a 14-game home stand for South Carolina that includes the Carolina Classic as well as the first two Southeastern Conference series of the year against Missouri (March 7-9) and Tennessee (March 13-15).

Seven position starters and the top two pitchers return from last year’s 36-22 team that made the program’s 17th appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
