Head Coach Chad Holbrook
Opening statement
“Congratulations to the College of Charleston. I think the story of the game was Taylor Clarke on the mound. He just dominated our hitters and I thought we’d put up a bit more of a fight than we did. It was a little disappointing. I apologize to our fans, it was a cold day and we couldn’t give them anything to get excited about. I’m disappointed from what occurred from an offensive standpoint and it’s my responsibility, we have to do better. But also, we have to give credit where credit is due. Sometimes in baseball, the guy on the bump can dictate what occurs in a game and their guy dictated the game. We had a chance there with the bases loaded in the first inning, might have been our chance to win the game there but we just couldn’t get a big hit. College of Charleston outplayed us and their starting pitcher did a phenomenal job. Their hitters were certainly more competitive in the batters box than we were and that’s disappointing. We’ll try to crank it up tomorrow and see if we can perform better and do better, because our performance from an offensive standpoint today was inexcusable. But, the good thing about baseball is you get to play again real quick, there’s a quick turn around, and we’ll be ready to go tomorrow at 1 o’clock.”

On changing the lineup tomorrow…
“I’m going to shuffle (the lineup). I put Max (Schrock) up there because Kyle (Martin) wasn’t playing. One because he (Max) is our best runner and two with Kyle not in the game, I just wanted him to come up again if I didn’t choose to play Kyle. Sometimes that fourth or fifth appearance with your best hitter can make a difference. That was the thought process there, but it didn’t work. With Kyle in the game, I certainly didn’t like the flow of the lineup today and maybe we’ll put Max in the three hole, Kyle in four and Alex in the five hole tomorrow. Maybe we’ll get a little bit more continuity that way. But, we’re certainly not going to do what we did today.”

On Kyle Martin’s situation
“Kyle’s been a figure in our program for four years now. He’s a senior and he broke a team rule, which comes with consequences. I’m going to keep the rule between me and Kyle and he’ll be in there tomorrow. No one wanted him in the lineup more than me, for him to take the field on Opening Day as a senior, but he broke a team rule and there are consequences. He’ll move past it, we’ll move past it, and he’ll be in there tomorrow.”

Player Quotes

Junior Left-Hander Jack Wynkoop
On the College of Charleston batters today…
“They grinded out at-bats and they took big swings early and shortened up late. They especially did that the second and third time through the order. You have to give that team some respect because they came out hit today and made some plays.”

On the way College of Charleston came out and played today…
“They are a good team and we have a lot of respect for them. We knew that it was going to be a battle. We’re going to have to regroup and come out and try to win the series tomorrow. “

Senior First Baseman Kyle Martin
On the College of Charleston pitching staff…
“I give credit to them. They kept pounding the zone and we just didn’t look like ourselves today. We’re going to have to come back with a better approach tomorrow.”

On College of Charleston pitcher, Taylor Clarke…
“He just kept pounding the zone with fastballs and I feel like we maybe weren’t ready for it. We weren’t aggressive enough and that’s something that is going to have to change.”
