ATHENS, Ga. – No. 3 South Carolina fell to Baylor, 3-2, in the final round of match play action at the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic in Athens, Ga., on Sunday. The Gamecocks got wins from sophomores Jia Xin Yang and Katelyn Dambaugh in the fifth-place match at the University of Georgia Golf Course.
Yang went undefeated in match play over the weekend after capping the event by taking down Baylor’s Giovana Maymon 3 and 1. Dambaugh captured the win over the Bears’ Dylan Kim, 3 and 2. Senior Justine Dreher fell to Hayley Davis, 2 and 1, while freshman Ainhoa Olarra dropped her match to Baylor’s Lauren Whyte, 3 and 2. Junior Sarah Schmelzel lost to Laura Lonardi 5 and 4.
This weekend was the Gamecocks’ first match play of the season. Yesterday, South Carolina fell to host Georgia, 3-2, before rebounding to take down No. 7 Arkansas, 3.5-1.5.
In 2014, the Liz Murphey became one of the first women’s events to switch to a combination of stroke and match play in advance of the NCAA Championships’ adaptation of a similar format in 2015. Yesterday, the Gamecocks earned the No. 2 seed after 18 holes of qualifying stroke play and advanced to the “Red” bracket. After playing two rounds of match play on Saturday, the teams wrapped up the event with one final round of match play on Sunday.
