Opening Statement
I thought our kids came out ready to play today; they swung the bats very well in the beginning of the game. The first four innings I think we hit some of the hardest balls we have all year. We needed to play well here, all these games are important down the stretch. Whether it is conference or non conference, they are all extremely important and they are all magnified because of the tough stretch we have had from the last couple of weeks. It was good to get a win at home. Reed Scott threw the ball well and got us off to a good start. It was good to see Canaan Cropper pitch tonight too. He will continue to get better each time he gets out there. All in all it was a good win for us and we are excited about welcoming The Citadel here at Carolina Stadium tomorrow night.
On coaching third base
It was the first time I coached third (base) since the National Championship series in 2012. I did it because when I sit right beside the players all the time and I’m talking to them all the time, I evaluate myself and wonder if I’m putting too much pressure on them or talking to them too much. Honestly, I just did it to see if the players would take a deep breath and (if it would) calm me so I could think through the game. I don’t know how long I’ll do it but I wanted to do it tonight. I got to see if it would help me and relax the players. It’s fun coaching third when your boys are hitting the way they are.
On Reed Scott’s performance
He changed speeds, he has to get his change up over. He still walked too many for him. He is a control pitcher that has great command. His command leaves him every now and then. He made some good pitches with his change up and it was good to see. He had some ground balls with his sinker and we played good defense behind him. He will give you a chance when he is throwing strikes if you play defense behind him and we did that tonight.
