COLUMBIA, S.C. – No. 47 South Carolina (13-13, 2-9 SEC) fell 4-2 to No. 14 Ole Miss (16-6, 8-3) at the Carolina Tennis Center on Thursday night.

Andrew Schafer / Andrew Adams made quick work of their opponent, winning the first match of doubles play 6-1. Senior duo Kyle Koch / Thiago Pinheiro clinched the doubles point for the Gamecocks with a 6-3 win.

Schafer downed his Rebel counterpart in two quick sets, winning 6-1, 6-3 to give South Carolina a 2-0 lead. Ole Miss responded by taking the next three singles points with wins in the No. 2, No. 6 and No. 5 slots. Koch led Stefan Lindmark for most of the first set but was unable to hold on and fell 6-4 in both sets. Sam Swank, the Gamecocks’ No. 5, battled to a tie break in his first set with Ricardo Jorge but fell 7-6 and 6-1. Adams and Pinheiro both dropped the one first two sets but fought through to send the match to a third set. Nik Scholtz defeated Adams 6-1 in the third set to clinch the overall victory for Ole Miss. Earlier in the day the Gamecocks picked up a 4-0 win over SC State (12-3)

“We had an earlier scheduled match during the day against South Carolina State, which got us ready mentally for this match,” said head coach Josh Goffi. “Unfortunately, it took a little bit of gas out of us and it showed at the end here (tonight). We were trying to get in, get a big lead early and we did that with doubles. Then (we wanted to) kind of get in and get out with singles early if we could, knowing that our guys might be a little bit fatigued from the previous match. Its one of those things that we had to scheduled in order to satisfy the .500 rule, its where we are in the season. Ole Miss played a great match. They took us the distance and I think they knew that was their goal today so credit to them. We’ll pick it up, reevaluate and move forward on Saturday.”

South Carolina’s next match is on Sat., April 11, when it hosts Arkansas at the Carolina Tennis Center at 11 a.m.
