GREENVILLE, N.C. – The Bill Carson Invitational kicked off Friday on the campus of East Carolina, with throws opening the competition. The Gamecocks swept all three events, and the women placed three in the top five in their lone event to position the team well in the overall standings.

Josh Awotunde opened the meet with a win in the discus throw. Each of his final three successful attempts would have clinched the win for him, as he finished with a best of 165 feet, flat. Kaleb Zuidema then followed with a win in the javelin, winning by more than 15 feet with a best attempt measured at 212 feet, nine inches.

Clarence Gallop closed the day with a win in the hammer, reaching his second-best distance of the season with a throw of 208 feet, five inches. Awotunde would also score for the Gamecocks, finishing third in his first hammer throw competition of the season.

In its lone event of the day, the women scored big in the javelin throw thanks to three top-five finishers. Olivia Hassler would be the top finisher for Carolina, taking third with a throw of 148 feet, three inches. She was followed by Amy Suttmeier (133-10) in fourth and Shelby Freedman (132-6) fifth.

In the team scores, the men are in first place, seven points ahead of Coastal Carolina. The women are in third, behind East Carolina and UNC-Wilmington. The meet resumes Saturday morning, with track events beginning at 11:30.
