Final Results Get Acrobat Reader

TEMPE, Ariz. – No. 4 South Carolina finished with a 54-hole total of 870 (+6) to tie for fourth at the PING/ASU Invitational at the ASU Karsten Golf Course after going 10-over (298) in the final round on Sunday. Sophomore Katelyn Dambaugh led the Gamecocks, taking fifth after finishing the tournament at 3-under.

The tournament featured the top five teams in the nation according to the latest Golfstat Relative Rankings. Southern Cal, the nation’s top-ranked team, tied for fourth with the Gamecocks, No. 5 Duke finished tied for seventh (+9). No. 3 UCLA was 15-over to take ninth and No. 2 Washington struggled, rounding out the weekend at 22-over to finish 14th.

Dambaugh, who became just the seventh player to post a round of 66 or better in Gamecock history yesterday, shot a 2-over 74 in Sunday’s final round. Dambaugh rounded out the tournament with a 3-under 213 for the tournament for her third collegiate top-five finish.

Senior Justine Dreher and junior Sarah Schmelzel also posted 74’s on Sunday. Dreher completed the tournament at 1-under to finish tied for 10th with a 54-hole total of 215. Schmelzel, an Arizona native, completed the event at 4-over (220) to tie for 27th.

Junior Mary Fran Hillow was 7-over for the tournament, after posting a round of 76 on Sunday (T45). Freshman Ainhoa Olarra shot an 80 (+8) in the final round to post a 228 (+12) over the 54 holes (T66).

Playing as an individual, sophomore Jia Xin Yang, rounded out her weekend at 4-over (220) after posting a round of 81 on Sunday.

No. 8 Arizona was the only team to finish the tournament under par, carding firing a score of 3-under (861) for the weekend to capture the title. Baylor and No. 25 Arizona State tied for second at 4-over and the Gamecocks tied with Southern Cal for fourth at 6-over.

NOTABLES

  • South Carolina holed 40 birdies over the course of the tournament, bested only by Stanford and Arizona (both with 45).
  • The finish extends the Gamecocks top-five finishes in stroke play to 15 regular season tournaments.

UP NEXT South Carolina begins postseason play at the SEC Championships in Birmingham, Ala. The event at the Greystone Golf & Country Club begins April 17 and runs through April 19.
