PINEHURST, N.C. – South Carolina golfer Katelyn Dambaugh won medalist honors after surging to the top of the leaderboard at the North & South Women’s Amateur Championship at Pinehurst Country Club on Wednesday. The rising junior shot a 2-under 68 on the final round of stroke play, and she will now compete in the match play rounds of the tournament starting on Thursday, July 16.

Dambaugh’s performance marked the low round of the week, as she became the only golfer to record a round under par in the tournament. After a bogey on the opening hole, Dambaugh caught fire recording an eagle on the second hole before carding birdies on five of the next six holes. She made the turn at 3-under and dropped just one shot on the final nine holes to finish with the top score (+8) through three days of the tournament.

The Goose Creek, S.C. native and the remaining 15 other qualifiers will resume action Thursday morning for the opening round of match play at Pinehurst No. 2 course. Top-seeded Dambaugh will face No. 16 seed Courtney Zeng at 7 a.m., and the quarterfinals will take place in the afternoon. The semifinals and 18-hole final get underway on Friday, July 17.

Dambaugh earned All-America honors from Golfweek this past season. Her 73.68 scoring average (minimum 55 rounds) currently stands as the lowest in program history, and she recorded three top-five finishes in her second year at South Carolina.

Rising senior Sarah Schmelzel was also in action at the North & South Amateur. She finished the third round of stroke play with a score of +18 for the tournament, one stroke short of qualification for match play.

Schmelzel played the first nine holes at 6-over before recording her first birdie of the day on the 10th hole. Needing one more birdie on the 18th hole, she settled for a par and finished +10 for the round.
