ATHENS, Ga. –
Junior Alex Fennell put the exclamation point on a huge fall for South Carolina men’s tennis as he was named the Bulldog Scramble Champion after posting a perfect 4-0 record at the event this weekend in Athens, Ga. For the Gamecocks, this marks their fourth fall title, third singles title of the fall and the second title in the last two weekends.

Fennell gave Georgia’s Nick Wood his first loss of the event on Sunday, winning in straight sets, 7-6 (3), 6-3, to remain undefeated in Athens and earn the title. Fennell ran through two opponents from host Georgia and an opponent each from Harvard and Notre Dame to go 4-0, improving his fall record to 11-3.

Junior Sam Swank also picked up a win on Sunday, taking down Harvard’s Kenny Tao, 7-6 (4), 6-1. Swank finished an impressive 3-1 on the weekend, moving his record to 13-5. His 13 wins have him tied for the team-lead in wins with sophomores Thomas Mayronne and Harrison O’Keefe heading into the spring.

In doubles, Fennell and Swank fell to Andy Yeung and Tao of Harvard in a tightly contested battle, 6-4. The Gamecock tandem finished 1-2 at the event.

The Gamecocks begin spring dual match play Jan. 16 with a home double-header against Presbyterian and Winthrop. For team information and updates visit www.GamecocksOnline.com and follow the team on Twitter and Instagram (@GamecockMTennis).
