Head Coach Chad Holbrook Opening Statement
I am proud of my (team). We made a couple mistakes at the plate but (our) young guys stepped up. You can sit over there sometimes and watch your team play and you know the product on the field is a good one and you are proud because of the effort they’re giving and they made this coach happy tonight. Not because we won but because of the way they competed against a great team. LSU is the number one team in the country for a reason. I am not trying to say anything about any of the other opponents that we have played, but that is as good of a college baseball team as we have played here in recent years. I mean they can run, they can throw, they have a big leaguer at shortstop. They all run 6.5 60s. Our boys followed up pitch by pitch and we were able to put two really good innings together in the sixth and the seventh and came out with a big win.
On DC Arendas’ Homerun
I think before that when we got the (score to) 6-4 you could feel the dug out and you could feel the energy in the stadium picking up. It didn’t look so good when we were down 6-2 and obviously their pitching staff had been pretty good all year. The 4 runs were going to be very difficult to get against them. But we got them 6-4 and we felt like we were running the game, a pitch here and a pitch there and then DC popped one out and made it 6-6. Then two huge double plays, two of the biggest plays of the game that will probably get lost in the shuffle. When they were up 6-2 with the bases loaded with one out and the best hitter, maybe one of the best hitters in the country hit the ball right on the nose over to Max (Schrock) and we were able to turn the ball into a double play. Then (runners) on first and third, DC made a nice play as well and those were probably the two biggest plays of the game. We won it with defense and we obviously had some really good competitive at bats throughout the night.
On Kyle Martin’s catch
That was a great play. That is not a play where you run up to the railing and then lean over to make a catch. He had to run through the railing so to speak. He had to sacrifice himself pretty good, layout and use the railing to stop him. Sometimes you can get over the rail on a high one and lean over the rail and catch it; you or me could have done that but you or me could not have made the play he just made. He was on the move pretty good; it was a heck of a play.
Junior Infielder Max Schrock
On overall performance
That was a group effort today. A lot of guys put a lot of good swings on the ball and you have to attribute a lot of that to our fans. That was probably the loudest I’ve ever heard Carolina Stadium since I’ve been here. That (the crowd) was awesome and we need that the rest of this weekend too. We feed off that energy, big time.
On the recent team hitting streak
Hitting is really contagious. Some guys have been swinging the bat real well and I think other guys are feeding off that. We are all working with Coach (Brian) Buscher in the cage trying to shorten things up and keep good approaches and I think it is showing on the field.
Sophomore Right-Hander Reed Scott
On keeping LSU off-balance
I knew our team was going to get some runs on the board. My job was to just hold them where they were. Whether it was one inning or three innings, I just knew our team would score some runs and it was my job not to let them (LSU) score runs.
Freshman Catcher Hunter Taylor
On his mindset
I’m really not doing too much, just trying to get hits and make things happen.
Senior First Baseman Kyle Martin
Overall thoughts on the win last weekend
I said it from the beginning that we have a great team, a strong team. Last weekend showed that we can battle with anybody. After this game, it shows how tough we really are. We were down 6-2 (tonight), ended up getting a couple hits and put some more runs up to tie it up, DC (Arendas) had a big hit and it just shows the fight we got right now.
Junior Infielder DC Arendas
On his home run
I felt like it had a chance to get out off the bat. Then after LSU went up a couple runs, I knew we were going to have to claw our way back into it. They are such a good offensive team that we knew we were going to have to put together some consecutive innings of scoring, as well as playing good defense. Max got us started early tonight and then it was a completely team effort after that to get back into the game
On what last weekend did for the team
Last weekend gave us some confidence because we were down several times by a couple runs against Texas A&M. Similar to today, we knew we just had to keep playing. I think we were down in the fourth or fifth inning so there was a lot of game left. Guys were just continuing to have good at bats. I felt like we were going to have a chance to compete for a win there.
