COLUMBIA, S.C. – University of South Carolina equestrian coach Boo Major on Tuesday announced the signing of Farley Wickre (Kitty Hawk, N.C./First Flight High School) to a National Letter of Intent to join the Gamecocks for the 2016-17 season. Wickre is a western rider and will compete in reining for the Gamecocks.

“We’re looking forward to having Farley join us next season,” Major said. “Farley is a very talented reiner and also has some experience in horsemanship, so she is someone who could certainly be a dual threat for us in the lineup. She has a long list of accomplishments at the All American Quarter Horse Congress and with the IEA (Interscholastic Equestrian Association), and we think she’s going to do very well for us.”

Wickre trains with Nick Valentine.

Last year, Wickre had a top-10 finish at the All American Quarter Horse Congress in NYATT Reining. She placed 11th in NY Showmanship and was a finalist in 15-18 Western Pleasure. She also was the IEA Reserve National Champion in Varsity Open Team Reining, and finished as the IEA Zone Year End High Point Varsity Open Rider. Wickre also was the High Point Rider at the NRHA Carolina Classic, March Into Spring, Martinganza & Memorial Day Classic in reining.

In 2014, Wickre secured a 12th place finish in NRHA Youth 14-18 Reining. In 2013, she had a top-5 finish in NY Horsemanship 14-18.

A senior at First Flight High School in Kill Devil Hills, N.C., Wickre is a decorated student both inside and outside of the classroom. She is currently the editor-in-chief of the FFHS Shorelines Yearbook, and spent the previous two years as the publication’s design editor. She participated in the Model United Nations, Student Government Association where she is a senior class officer, and is a member of the National Honor Society.

Her parents are Glenn and Kim Wickre.

Wickre chose South Carolina over Auburn, Georgia, and Delaware State.

While at South Carolina, Wickre plans to major in Marketing in the Darla Moore School of Business.
