COLUMBIA, S.C. ââ’¬” For the second time this season, freshman Ingrid Gamarra Martins of the 12th-ranked South Carolina women’s tennis team was honored as the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week, the league office announced Wednesday. The SEC weekly honor is the third for the team this spring, which is off to an 8-2 start en route to its highest ranking since 2002.

Martins, currently ranked No. 118 in the nation, helped clinch two points for South Carolina in Sunday’s 4-3 win over then-No. 27 Wake Forest. Her doubles win with teammate Ximena Siles Luna secured the doubles point for Carolina, while her come-from-behind singles win at No. 3 clinched the match.

Martins boasts an 8-2 dual match record this season and a 17-4 singles record overall. She’s been equally impressive in doubles, recording a 7-2 record in dual match play. The Brazilian earned her first SEC Freshman of the Week honor on Feb. 3, following a perfect showing against No. 7 Virginia and No. 56 Marshall.

South Carolina opens its SEC schedule this weekend as it hosts No. 57 Missouri on Thur., Mar. 3, and No. 35 Arkansas on Sat., Mar. 5, at the Carolina Tennis Center.
