BREAKING DOWN THE PALMETTO INTERCOLLEGIATE
NCAA Division II powerhouse USC Aiken hosts 16 of the nation’s top collegiate men’s golf programs at the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate, scheduled for March 7-8 in Aiken, S.C. The Gamecocks enter the tournament as the top-ranked squad in the field, at No. 22 according to Golfstat. Virginia checks in at No. 26, while Augusta (35), NC State (43), East Carolina (45), Liberty (54), Georgia Southern (62) and Maryland (74) also come in as top-75 teams. The Gamecocks will play 36 holes on Monday and 18 holes on Tuesday, with a shotgun start scheduled for 9 a.m. ET.
Carolina is the defending champion at Palmetto Golf Club after shooting a total of 825 (-15) last season to beat Clemson by one stroke. Will Starke was the medalist last season with a three-day score of 201 (-9), and Matt NeSmith finished tied for 21st at 210 (E).
Ranked as the 20th-best golf course in the state of South Carolina by Golf Digest, Palmetto Golf Club features a 6,695-yard, par-71 layout. The course’s original four-hole design was built in 1892 and expanded to 18 holes in 1895, making Palmetto the oldest continually operated 18-hole golf course in its original location in the Southeast.
Quoting Coach Bill McDonald
“It has the feel of a home event, in the sense that a lot of our guys have grown up playing the golf course. Matt NeSmith is from that area, and most of our players have played there at least 20 or 30 times. It’s nice just going 45 minutes down the road. It’s also nice to be defending again. We were defending champions in Houston and didn’t quite get it done, so we’ll have to see if we can defend (our title) at the Palmetto.”
