COLUMBIA, S.C. – Freshman Ingrid Gamarra Martins of No. 13 South Carolina women’s tennis was named to the SEC All-Freshman Team, the league office announced Wednesday. She becomes the first Gamecock rookie to be named to a conference team since 2007 when Ana Marija Zubori was named All-SEC Second Team.

“Ingrid has had a fantastic freshman campaign,” head coach Kevin Epley said. “We are thrilled she made the SEC All-Freshman team and we expect big things from her in the future.”

Martins burst onto the scene with an impressive fall campaign during which she compiled a 9-2 singles record and 10-2 doubles mark. She began the spring ranked No. 54 in the nation and went on to the lead the team with 47 combined wins on her way to becoming the SEC’s only three-time SEC Freshman of the Week award winner. She spent the majority of the spring at No. 2 in the singles lineup, where she went 6-6 in league play and currently sits at No. 77 in the individual rankings. She led the team with 14 doubles wins in dual-match play after winning three of her last four contests with teammate Rachel Rohrabacher.

Martins and the Gamecocks are waiting to see their names announced for the NCAA Tournament during the selection show airing on NCAA.com at 5 p.m. on Tues., May 3. The Gamecocks are hoping to host one of the 16 NCAA Regionals, played May 13-15, for the first time since 2002.
