NeSmith Named to All-Nicklaus Team
June 22, 2016
FORMBY, England — University of South Carolina Men’s Golf graduated senior Matt NeSmith was awarded a position on the 2016 All-Nicklaus Team presented by Barbasol, the Golf Coaches Association of America announced today. NeSmith received the honor by earning a spot on the Nicklaus Award semifinalist list that was announced in May.
The postseason award is another notch on NeSmith’s 2015-16 resume, which already includes South Carolina’s first ever PING First Team All-America honor and a semifinalist bid for the Ben Hogan Award. The North Augusta, S.C., native was a two-time medalist this season and ended his career with a program-record 71.65 stroke average.
Led by NeSmith, the 2015-16 Gamecocks won four tournaments and finished seventh in the stroke play portion of the 2016 NCAA Championship, a program best. The Gamecocks advanced to match play for the first time and ended the season ranked 10th in the nation by Golfstat.
Now playing his trade on the professional circuit, NeSmith has full status on the Mackenzie Tour along with fellow Gamecock alums Sean Kelly, Caleb Sturgeon and Will Starke. All four former Gamecocks tee off at the SIGA Dakota Dunes Open in Whitecap, Saskatchewan, on Thursday.
