June 23, 2016
COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina’s Matt NeSmith has been named a Golfweek Second-Team All-American, the publication announced. The All-America honor is the second of the season for NeSmith, who was also a PING First-Team selection.
NeSmith has continued to add to his trophy collection after an outstanding season that saw the North Augusta, S.C., native lead the Gamecocks to heights previously unseen. He was an All-Nicklaus Team selection, a PING All-Southeast Regional honoree, a First-Team All-SEC pick and a semifinalist for both the Ben Hogan and Jack Nicklaus Awards.
NeSmith won medalist honors at two tournaments as a senior and led the Gamecocks to four victories as a team. His final career stroke average of 71.65 is a Carolina program record, as are his 25 top-10 finishes. He is the program’s first First-Team All-America selection and ranks second in program history with four career honors.
With NeSmith leading the way, South Carolina finished the season ranked No. 10 in the Golfstat national rankings, their second consecutive top-10 result. The Gamecocks placed seventh in the stroke play portion of the NCAA Championship and qualified for match play for the first time. They also finished second at the NCAA Tuscaloosa Regional.
NeSmith is currently one month into a career on the professional golf circuit. He is currently in action at the SIGA Dakota Dunes Open in Whitecap, Saskatchewan, along with fellow Carolina alumni Sean Kelly, Will Starke and Caleb Sturgeon.
