Jennings Wins U.S. 3x3 National Championship

Aug. 30, 2016

COLUMBIA ââ’¬” University of South Carolina junior Alexis Jennings helped her team, Defend, to a 6-2 record en route to the 2016 USA Basketball 3×3 Women’s National Championship. The team, which also includes Ohio State’s Linnae Harper, Washington’s Natalie Romeo and Florida State’s Chatrice White, will represent the U.S. in the 2016 FIBA 3×3 World Championship that will be played Oct. 11-15 in Guangzhou, China.

Defend entered Sunday’s championship round as the No. 3 seed after finishing 3-2 in preliminary round-robin play. However, the team came out strong and defeated UCCS 21-5 in the quarterfinals, downed Ariel 21-12 in the semis and fought to a 19-17 gold medal victory over previously undefeated Unknowns. Jennings and White went on to win the Partner Hot Shot gold medal as well.

Held every other year in even numbered years, this marks the third time FIBA has hosted the 3×3 World Championships. The United States’ entry in the women’s event has won both previous gold medals, including 2014 with former Gamecock Tiffany Mitchell on the squad. The 2016 tournament will feature a total of 40 teams from 30 different countries and every continent. Nations qualified on the women’s side include Andorra, Argentina, Australia, Brazil, host China, Chinese Taipei, Cook Islands, Czech Republic, France, Hungary, Israel, Italy, Netherlands, New Zealand, Poland, Romania, Spain, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates and the United States. It is the first time the competition is being held in Asia after being staged in Athens, Greece, in 2012 and Moscow, Russia, in 2014.
