Carolina Has Strong Showing In Singles, Title Opportunities Await Sunday

Sept. 24, 2016

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Gamecock women’s tennis team had another strong outing at the UVA Invitational on Saturday as the team competed exclusively in singles action. The standout performer on day two was Paige Cline, who won both of her matches to reach the finals in the Orange draw.

“Today was solid overall,” said head coach Kevin Epley. “We competed well and had the opportunity to see how the girls stack up to tough competition. Paige will be playing for a title in singles and doubles, showing that she can keep improving. We are also seeing some things we need to work on with a few of the girls, which it what these fall tournaments are all about.”

Joining Cline in the Orange draw was Rachel Rohrabacher, who posted a win in her quarterfinal match, taking down Jena Cheng of Utah. A loss in the semifinal to Old Dominion’s Holly Hutchinson prevented an all-South Carolina final. Rohrabacher will play in the third place match on Sunday at 10:30 a.m. against Maryland’s Kristina Hovesepyan. Cline’s finals match will be at the same time.

In the Blue draw, Hadley Berg and Silvia Chinellato each posted a win in their respective quarterfinal match before falling in the semifinals. Berg and Chinellato will faceoff against one another in their draw’s third place match on Sunday at noon.

In the white draw, Brigit Folland notched a quarterfinals victory over Virginia’s Camille Favero before dropping her semifinal matchup as well. She will take on Chloe Gullickson of Virginia in the draw’s third place match on Sunday at 10 a.m.

Also on the docket for Carolina tomorrow is two doubles finals matches. Berg and Cline will battle Chloe Gullickson and Cassie Mercer of UVA in the White draw, while Chinellato and Rohrabacher will go to work against Natalia Vlasova and Holly Hutchinson of Old Dominion in the Orange draw. Both matches will take place at 9 a.m.
