Gamecocks Hold at No. 8 in NCEA Rankings
Sept. 28, 2016
COLUMBIA, S.C. – The University of South Carolina equestrian team remains No. 8 in the latest edition of the NCEA national rankings, which were released Wednesday. The Gamecocks are one of four SEC teams ranked in the poll.
South Carolina stayed at No. 8 after defeating No. 5 Baylor, 12-6, on Sept. 16 at One Wood Farm. The Gamecocks swept all five equitation over fences points en route to doubling up the Bears in the regular season debut for both teams.
Three Gamecocks won M.O.P. honors in the Baylor victory: Katie Mack (equitation on the flat), Madison Butehorn (equitation over fences) and Madison Thiel (reining). In addition to leading their respective events, both Mack and Butehorn collected their first collegiate victories against the Bears.
The schedule doesn’t get easier for head coach Boo Major’s team, as 11 of their 12 regular season competitions are against opponents ranked in this week’s poll. No. 3 Texas A&M visits One Wood Farm on Friday, with No. 2 Georgia coming to town on Oct. 7 and No. 10 New Mexico State on the schedule for Oct. 21.
