Jennings Set for FIBA 3x3 World Championships

COLUMBIA ââ’¬” University of South Carolina junior Alexis Jennings and her United States teammates Linnae Harper (Ohio State), Natalie Romeo (Washington) and Chatrice White (Florida State) open play in the 2016 FIBA Women’s 3×3 World Championships on Tue., Oct. 11, in Guangzhou, China, which is 12 hours ahead of Eastern Time. All games will stream live on YouTube.

“It means a lot to represent my country,” Jennings said. “I’m thankful for the opportunity to do that. I hope to bring to the team a lot of energy, rebounding and my low post moves ââ’¬” what I’m good at. I’m going to be a role player for my team and do whatever they need me to do.”

Playing in Group C, the Americans will play twice on Tuesday, facing Italy at 2:20 a.m. (ET) and Japan at 5:40 a.m. Back in action on Thursday, Jennings and her teammates will take on Taiwan (2:20 a.m.) and Spain (5 a.m.) to wrap up preliminary-round action. The top two teams in each group advance to the quarterfinals, which are set for Sat., Oct. 15, at either 2:50 a.m. or 4 a.m. To win gold, a team must win all three games on Saturday as the semifinals are set for 5:50 and 6:15 a.m. and the gold medal game slated for 8:30 a.m.

Held every other year in even numbered years, this marks the third time FIBA has hosted the 3×3 World Championships. The United States’ entry in the women’s event has won both previous gold medals, including in 2014 with former Gamecock Tiffany Mitchell on the squad. The 2016 tournament features 20 women’s teams from Andorra, Argentina, Australia, host China, Cook Islands, Czech Republic, France, Hungary, Indonesia, Israel, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, New Zealand, Poland, Romania, Spain, Taiwan, , Ukraine and the United States. It is the first time the competition is being held in Asia after being staged in Athens, Greece, in 2012 and Moscow, Russia, in 2014.
