ITA Carolina Regional Championships on Deck for Men's Tennis

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The South Carolina men’s tennis team continues fall action this weekend at the ITA Carolina Regional Championships at the Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C. Eight Gamecocks are set to compete at the tournament, which runs from Friday, Oct. 14 through Tuesday, Oct. 18.

“I think we are all very excited to go to this tournament for a few reasons,” said head coach Josh Goffi. “It’s the first time this fall that we are all together as a complete team and, for most of the guys, this is the biggest tournament of the fall for them. They are ready to see how they perform in a high level event.”

The weekend officially kicks off at 8:30 a.m. on Friday with the opening round of singles, followed by the round of 64, which also includes a consolation round of 64. On Saturday, play is slated to begin at 9 a.m. with a singles round of 32, followed by the doubles round of 64, doubles round of 32 and a consolation doubles round of 32. Sunday’s schedule, which commences at 9 a.m., will feature the singles round of 16 and quarterfinals, as well as the doubles round of 16. Monday’s docket is set to start at 10 a.m. with the singles semifinals prior to getting into the doubles quarterfinals and semifinals. Tuesday, the final day of the tournament, is slated to begin at 10 a.m. with the singles finals, followed by the doubles finals. Several Gamecocks head into this weekend having performed well in their last outing. Most recently, at the Georgia Tech Fall Invitational this past weekend, Yancy Dennis captured the DII singles title in an all-Carolina final against teammate Thomas Mayronne. Dennis now sits at 6-1 on the season in singles with his only loss coming to 16th-ranked Wayne Montgomery of Georgia at the Southern Intercollegiates. Mayronne is 6-2 through two tournaments played, which includes a semifinal appearance at the Ivy-Plus Tournament and the finals match against Dennis at Georgia Tech. At the beginning of October, freshman Scotty Cameron won the Flight B singles title at the South Carolina Collegiate Invitational. The newcomer is 5-1 in singles play thus far this fall.
