Friedrich to Play in Title Match at ITA Carolina Regional Championships

Oct. 17, 2016

CARY, N.C. – In a semifinal battle between two Gamecocks on Monday, Gabriel Friedrich topped teammate Thomas Mayronne 6-2, 6-0 to advance to the title match at the ITA Carolina Regional Championships. It is the first time since 2009 that a Gamecock has been featured in the tournament’s finale. Diego Cubas reached the final that year, but ultimately fell in three sets.

The top seed in the tournament, Wake Forest’s Skander Mansouri, awaits Friedrich on Tuesday morning at 9 a.m. Mansouri’s path to the final saw him earn straight-set victories over each of the five opponents he faced, including Carolina’s Harrison O’Keefe. Friedrich needed three sets to come out victorious on just one occasion, against North Carolina’s Bo Boyden. The Porto Alegre, Brazil native rallied after an opening set loss to capture the match 3-6, 7-6 (4), 6-3.

Also on tap Monday was a doubles quarterfinals match, featuring Mayronne and Andrew Schafer. After a strong run the last few days, the duo could not get past the team of Robert Kelly and Josh Peck from North Carolina.
