Gamecocks Open Play at ITA Regionals Thursday
Oct. 19, 2016
COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Gamecock women’s tennis team returns to action this weekend at the ITA Carolina Regional Championships in Chapel Hill, N.C. The tournament, which is being hosted by the University of North Carolina, is set to run from Thursday, Oct. 20 through Monday, Oct. 24 at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
“We always love the regional tournament because it’s a great opportunity to see how far we’ve progressed with fall training,” said head coach Kevin Epley. “It will also give us an indication as to where we will be at the beginning of the spring season. I’m looking forward to seeing how we stack up against some other great teams in the region. “
Eight Gamecocks are set to compete in the event, including freshman Mia Horvit, who will make her collegiate debut this weekend. Thursday’s schedule is slated to begin at 8:30 a.m. with qualifying singles matches. Carolina’s lone representative in that draw is Alison Mills, who takes on Campbell’s Alex Nicoara in the first round. With two wins Thursday, Mills would qualify for the main draw.
Following singles play in the morning, the afternoon will feature two rounds of main draw doubles. The above link to the doubles draw does not reflect the latest pairings for the Gamecocks but it will be updated once a new bracket is provided. Carolina’s doubles pairings for the tournament will be Silvia Chinellato/Ingrid Gammara Martins, Caroline Dailey/Mia Horvit, Hadley Berg/Brigit Folland and Alison Mills/Hannah Templeton. So far this fall, Chinellato and Martins are 2-0 as a duo, while Mills and Templeton have combined for a 3-4 mark. The other two tandems have not yet played together this fall. However, Berg and Folland played together on five occasions last fall and went 4-1.
A more complete schedule of events will be updated on this page once it becomes available. Stay tuned to Twitter (@GamecockWTennis) and GamecocksOnline.com for updates throughout the weekend.
