Three Advance on Day One of Charlotte Invitational

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Carolina men’s tennis team closed out its first day of play at the Charlotte Invitational on Friday. Three Gamecocks advanced to their draw’s singles quarterfinals.
Friday’s action began with doubles play in the morning. The lone team competing for the Gamecocks featured seniors Alex Fennell and Sam Swank. The duo opened with a 6-2 triumph over Davidson’s pair of David Hager and Ricky Saad. In the semifinals, they were downed, 6-3, by Scott Webster and Jack Maddocks of Appalachian State. On Saturday, Fennell and Swank will take on Clemson’s Robert Dudley and Arturo Pinazo at 9 a.m.
In singles, Fennell and Wood Benton advanced to the quarterfinals in the A1 draw with straight-set victories over opponents from UNC-Greensboro. Both will play their respective quarterfinal match at 10 a.m. Saturday. In the A2 draw, Sam Swank fell to Wofford’s Harris Poric 7-5, 6-3. Over in the B1 Draw, Scotty Cameron opened with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Alex Brea of Appalachian State. The freshman’s quarterfinal match is set for 11:30 a.m. on Saturday against Davidson’s Tommy Mason.
