Martins Falls in National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships Opener
Nov. 3, 2016
FLUSHING, N.Y. – Gamecock women’s tennis sophomore Ingrid Gamarra Martins concluded her first day at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships on Thursday. She fell to California’s Karla Popovic in the main draw singles opening round.
“Ingrid had some opportunities to win today but came up short,” said assistant coach Jeff Nevolo. “It’s great that we get the chance to compete again tomorrow and continue to improve. This is a great tournament and there’s still a lot to be gained as we start the consolation draw.”
Martins opened with a 6-4 first set win and was in command in the second set, up 3-1 at one point. Popovic battled back to take the second stanza 7-5, and went on to capture the decisive third set 6-2. The Rio de Janeiro, Brazil native returns to the court on Friday for a round of 16 consolation match. She will take on Nevada’s Claudia Herrero at 12:30 p.m.
