Martins Advances in Consolation Bracket at National Indoors

Nov. 4, 2016

FLUSHING, N.Y. – Carolina women’s tennis’ Ingrid Gamarra Martins finished off her second day of action at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships on Friday afternoon. She took down Nevada’s Claudia Herrero in the consolation round of 16.

“It’s always great to advance, especially at a tournament of this caliber,” said assistant coach Jeff Nevolo. “Ingrid did a nice job closing out the match in the third set. We have another great opportunity tomorrow for us here in NYC.”

Herrero opened up with a 6-1 first set win, but Martins battled back to secure a 6-4 triumph in the second set. In the critical third and final set, she cruised to a 6-1 win to take the match. Martins will now turn her attention to a Saturday consolation quarterfinals match against North Carolina’s Sara Daavettila. The time for that contest has not yet become available. With a win in that match, Martins would then play one more round on Saturday.
