Gamecocks Ready for NCAA Southeast Regionals

Nov. 10, 2016

COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina faces another tough field on Friday, facing 33 other teams in the NCAA Division I Cross Country Southeast Regional Championships on Panorama Farms in Earlysville, Va.

The Gamecocks take a familiar group to Panorama, sending the same 12 that competed at the SEC Championships two weeks prior to the regional race. Led by senior Mary Reiser, South Carolina hopes its fortunes improve running closer to its home base. Senior Kayla Scott, redshirt junior Martha McCoy, juniors Allie Sprague, Kaylee Wessel and Monica York and sophomore Allison Mueller bring the postseason experience alongside Reiser. Freshmen Emily Crounse, Leah Ford, Colleen Openshaw and Anna Kathryn Stoddard as well as junior Sarah Taylor all run in their first regionals on Friday morning.

The race, set to begin at 11 a.m. EST for the women’s 6K, pits the best in the region, which consists of schools in the states of Kentucky, Virginia, North and South Carolina, on the course near the grounds of the host institution, the University of Virginia. The Cavaliers have won three of the last five regionals, but they enter the week 10th in the USTFCCCA Regional Rankings. The top-two team finishers and top four individuals of teams who don’t earn a bid to move on as a group advance to the NCAA Championships, held Nov. 19 at Indiana State University.
