Hunt Seat Rider Louisa Brackett Joins Gamecock Equestrian

Nov. 28, 2016

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Head Coach Boo Major and the University of South Carolina equestrian team are excited to welcome Louisa Brackett to the Gamecock program. Brackett recently signed a National Letter of Intent to join Carolina for the 2017-18 season.

“Louisa first caught our eye at one of our camps a couple years ago,” Major said. “Both assistant coach Hillary Dobbs and I liked her a lot but thought she was a little rough around the edges. We challenged her to work towards higher goals than to just be competitive in the jumpers, and she has done just that.”

A native of Grayslake, Ill., Brackett attends Carmel Catholic High School. She is the daughter of Boone and Andrea Brackett and has one sister, Amelia.

Brackett brings a decorated resume to the Carolina program. She finished 10th at the Pessoa U.S. Medal Finals in 2016 and also won the Devoucoux Hunter Prix in Culpepper, Va., the National Hunter Derby in Tampa, and the High Junior Jumper Classic in Chicago this season. In 2015, she was the WEF Week 8 Medium Junior Jumper Classic champion and was the $10,000 National Hunter Derby Winner at Ledges.

In addition to qualifying for the Pessoa Finals this season, Brackett advanced to the 2016 Maclay Finals and the East Talent Search Finals in 2015 and 2016.

“Louisa has blossomed into quite the rider under the tutelage of some great trainers,” Major added. “We think she will have an immediate impact on our hunt seat team, and we are excited to have her on board.”

Brackett is a strong student who has been selected to the honor roll multiple times. She is a member of the Ambassadors Club, the Environmental Club and the Social Justice Club at Carmel Catholic High School.
