Horvit Climbs in ITA Rankings

March 7, 2017

COLUMBIA, S.C. ââ’¬” After showing skill and maturity in the No. 1 spot this season, South Carolina freshman Mia Horvit improved to No. 58 in this week’s ITA Singles Rankings, it was announced Wednesday. The ranking is 42 spots higher than her previous ranking of No. 100 and is a career best ranking for Horvit.

Horvit leads the team with 19 singles wins this season and is tied for first with 10 doubles victories. She has notched three ranked wins in dual play, including a 7-6(8), 6-3 victory over then No. 45 Rachel Pierson of Texas A&M. Horvit went on a 14-win streak from Oct. 21 to Jan. 28, the longest on the team this season. In the fall, Horvit won the Jack Kramer Collegiate Invitational defeating UCLA’s Terri Fleming in straight-sets for the title.

Also in the rankings is sophomore Ingrid Gamarra Martins coming in at No. 35, dropping six spots from her previous ranking. Martins started the season 2-0, notching a win over Michelle Valdez (58) in straight sets, but has been plagued with injury this season keeping her off the courts since she retired mid-match Feb. 5 against Virginia.

Hadley Berg and Paige Cline come in at No. 27 in doubles, the only ranked Gamecock duo. The pair is 7-6 this season and 3-4 in dual matches, 0-1 in SEC play.

As a team the Gamecocks come in ranked No. 24, falling five spots from their previous ranking of 19th. South Carolina is 9-3 overall this season, coming off split results in their first weekend of SEC play.

The Gamecocks return to action Saturday, March 11 as they continue their road SEC slate to face No. 1 Florida in Gainesville, Fla. at 1 p.m.
