SEC Co-Field Athlete of the Week: Rougui Sow

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — University of South Carolina junior Rougui Sow has been named SEC Female Co-Field Athlete of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday. This is the first weekly conference honor earned by Sow during her time with the Gamecocks.

Sow was honored after winning the Lewis Gainey Long Jump competition in historic fashion last weekend at the Spec Towns Invitational in Athens, Ga. Sow jumped 22-0 ¾ (6.72m), a new South Carolina school record and the top mark in the world this outdoor season.

With her jump, Sow passed Chelsea Hammond’s 2004 school record of 21-6 ¾. She also moved past Australian athlete Naa Anang, who jumped 6.65m at a competition in Canberra on March 12.

Sow is the fifth Gamecock honored by the SEC with an athlete of the week award this season. Josh Awotunde was named Co-Field Athlete of the Week on March 27, and fellow thrower Eric Favors earned Men’s Freshman of the Week laurels on Feb. 21, the same day Taranisha Taylor was named Women’s Runner of the Week. Newcomer Darrell Singleton Jr. added to the tally March 21, when he garnered a Men’s Freshman of the Week nod.

UP NEXT FOR THE GAMECOCKS

South Carolina hosts the Gamecock Invitational on Saturday, with action beginning at 9 a.m. ET and continuing throughout the day at Sheila & Morris Cregger Track.
