Horvit Advances to Second Round of NCAA Singles

ATHENS, Ga. ââ’¬” South Carolina women’s freshman and 47th-ranked Mia Horvit defeated No. 118 Ioanna Markesini of East Tennessee State University 4-6, 6-0, 6-2, Wednesday in the First Round of the NCAA Tennis Singles Championships at the Dan McGill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga. Horvit will move on to face Duke’s Meible Chi, ranked No.43, in the Second Round Thursday. Horvit battled early in the first set with Markesini, eventually falling 6-4, taking multiple points to deuce. Horvit, however, turned things around in the second set dominating her opponent with a 6-0 score. In the deciding third set, Horvit jumped out to a 3-0 lead giving up just two games on her way to a 6-2 victory to move on to the next round. The win marks the freshman’s seventh ranked victory of the season and her third in postseason play. Horvit is the first Gamecock to advance to the Round of 32 in the NCAA Singles Championship since Anya Morgina in 2012.
