Berg/Cline Move on to NCAA Round of 16

May 25, 2017

ATHENS, Ga. — Junior Hadley Berg and sophomore Paige Cline of the South Carolina women’s tennis team defeated UCLA’s top tandem of Jada Hart and Ena Shibahara (12) 6-3, 5-2 when the pair retired due to injury Thursday in the First Round of the NCAA Doubles Championship at the Dan Magill Tennis Center in Athens, Ga.

The win marks the second year in a row the pair advanced to the Round of 16. The 25th-ranked duo will take on the winner of the match between Mami Adachi and Aldila Sutjiadi (6) of Kentucky and Georgia Tech’s Rasheeda McAdoo and Johnnise Renaud (23) on Friday.

Berg and Cline fought for every game early in the first set before securing three straight games to claim the set win with a 6-3 score. The pair took an early lead again in the second set and used the momentum to power to a 5-2 score before Hart and Shibahara were forced to retire due to an injury.
