COLUMBIA, S.C. — University of South Carolina track & field redshirt junior Markus Leemet was named to the 2017 CoSIDA Academic All-District 4 team, the organization announced today.
Leemet, a native of Tallinn, Estonia, has served as Carolina’s top multi-event athlete this season, including a historic outdoor campaign. Two weeks ago at the SEC Championships, Leemet broke a 27-year-old school record in the decathlon, finishing with 7,720 points. The score earned him the SEC bronze medal, a feat he also achieved in 2015.
Leemet’s total of 7,720 points ranks 10th in the NCAA Division I ranks, which is good enough for a berth at the 2017 NCAA Championships, to be held June 7-10 in Eugene, Ore.
A classroom star, Leemet is a finance major who boasts a 3.77 GPA. He is a two-time SEC Academic Honor Roll selection and was a USTFCCCA All-Academic Team member in 2016.
As a CoSIDA Academic All-District honoree, Leemet is eligible for the organization’s Academic All-America list. Twelve previous Gamecocks have earned the distinction, including at least one selection in each of the past eight seasons.
UP NEXT FOR THE GAMECOCKS
Leemet’s teammates will attempt to join him in Eugene by qualifying at the 2017 NCAA East Regional, which begins Thursday afternoon in Lexington, Ky.
