May 26, 2017
ATHENS, Ga. ââ’¬” South Carolina freshman Mia Horvit closed out her run through the NCAA Singles Championship Friday with a 6-4, 5-7, 6-1 loss to No. 40 Estela Perez-Somarriba of Miami. The Gamecocks’ top singles entry finished the season with a 27-12 record overall and a 16-11 record in the spring. Final rankings will be released next week as will the official announcement of All-America selections, which will include Horvit. Horvit claimed the first game in the first set, but gave up the next five in quick succession to give Perez-Somarriba a commanding lead. Horvit was able to take three games before Perez-Somarriba closed out the first set with a 6-4 score. In the second set, Horvit again claimed the first game before Perez-Somarriba took four for herself to secure a 4-1 lead. Horvit posted a late rally to take six of the remaining seven games for a 7-5 victory in the second set. Horvit couldn’t carry the momentum into the third set, capturing just one game before Perez-Somarriba claimed the 6-4, 5-7, 6-1 victory and punched her ticket to the Quarterfinals of the NCAA Singles Championships. Horvit defeated No. 118 Ioanna Markesini of East Tennessee State University 4-6, 6-0, 6-2 in the First Round and No. 43 Meible Chi of Duke 6-4, 6-1 in the Second Round to become the first freshman and second Gamecock in program history to earn All-America distinction.
