Dates: July 15-16

Location: Bydgoszcz, Poland

Venue: Zawisza Stadium

BYDGOSZCZ, Poland — University of South Carolina rising junior Rougui Sow finished fourth in the long jump competition at the 2017 European Athletics U23 Championships, which concluded Sunday. Sow’s top jump of the day was 6.46m (21-2 ½).

The Le Havre, France, native led the competition after one round, with her leap of 6.46m topping the field. She was able to duplicate that mark with her third attempt, and it would stand as her best effort of the day.

On Saturday, Sow had earned a spot in the 13-competitor final round by placing ninth in prelims. Her best mark in the opening round was 6.34m (20-9 ¾).

Sow’s fellow French international, Yanis David, won the event with a jump of 6.56m (21-6 ¼) on her final attempt of the competition.

Sow’s strong international performances come on the heels of a double All-American campaign during the 2017 collegiate season. In her first year with the Gamecocks, Sow placed sixth in the long jump at both the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Championships. She set a school record outdoors with an effort of 6.72m (22-0 ¾) at the Spec Towns Invitational in April and added a bronze medal at the SEC Outdoor Championships in May.

With her season-best of 6.72m, Sow is currently ranked 20th in the world this season and in line to compete at the 2017 IAAF World Championships. The biggest event in track & field this season runs August 4-13 in London, and Sow hopes to be joined by Gamecock teammate Ncincilili Titi, whose 200m time of 20.14 is 16th-best in the world and third-best in his native South Africa this year.
