Sept. 25, 2017
IRVING, Texas — South Carolina swept the Conference USA Weekly Awards for men’s soccer the league office announced Monday afternoon. Goalkeeper William Pyle was named C-USA Defensive Player of the Week and forward Luca Mayr was tabbed C-USA Offensive Player of the Week.
Pyle picks up his third career C-USA weekly award after pitching his second shutout of the season in the team’s 1-0 victory over No. 13 Furman last Tuesday. The Charlotte, N.C., native, had two big saves down the stretch in the match.
Last Friday Pyle posted a season-high seven saves in the team’s 2-2 draw vs. New Mexico, giving him nine saves total for the week. Pyle did a great job under siege, as the Lobos had 23 shots and 10 shots on goal. He’s outdueled opponent’s keepers with a 20-6 saves edge in the second half this season.
Pyle was recently named one of 30 candidates in NCAA Division I men’s soccer for the 2017 Senior Class Award.
For Mayr, this marks his first career player of the week honor. The do it all forward scored the game-winner vs. the nationally Paladins in the 50th minute on Tuesday. He then assisted on Carolina’s first goal vs. New Mexico on Friday as he made the extra pass in transition to set up teammate Justin Sukow.
Mayr leads the team with 10 points (3G, 4A) in 2017. He’s already surpassed his points total from his freshman year through eight games this season. Mayr currently ranks fourth in C-USA for points and is tied for the league lead with four assists.
The Gamecocks continue their tough nonconference slate as they hit the road to face No. 4 Wake Forest (8-1-0, 3-0-0 ACC) on Tuesday night. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET and the game will be televised on ACC Network Extra/WatchESPN.
