Lauren Chang Named SEC Freshman Of The Week

Sept. 25, 2017

COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina midfielder Lauren Chang has been selected as the SEC Freshman of the Week, the league office announced Monday afternoon. The accolade marks the first career weekly conference honor for the Alpharetta, Ga., native.

Chang delivered the overtime game-winner in Carolina’s 1-0 victory over No. 21 Tennessee this past Sunday after finding the back of the net in the 95th minute. The midfielder, who started on the field in the extra period after coming off the bench during regulation, used her left leg to one-time a loose ball in the box and clinch the win for the Gamecocks in this past weekend’s top-25 battle at Stone Stadium.

The goal marked Chang’s second of the year, and she became the fourth Carolina newcomer to register a game-winner in 2017. Her two goals and four points this season are tied for first among Gamecock freshmen and good for the third-best total on the team.

Chang became the fourth Carolina player to earn a weekly league award this year, joining sophomore goalkeeper Mikayla Krzeczowski (Defensive Player of the Week – Sept. 11, Sept. 5), Bianca Galassini (Freshman of the Week – Sept. 5) and Elexa Bahr (Offensive Player of the Week – Sept. 11). The Gamecocks have boasted a player of the week honoree in three of the last four installments of the award.

Carolina returns to action this Friday (Sept. 29) when it faces No. 20 Ole Miss on the road. Kickoff from Ole Miss Soccer Stadium is slated for 8 p.m. ET, and the match can be seen on SEC Network+ through WatchESPN.
