South Carolina Finishes Play at ITA Regionals

CARY, N.C. – The South Carolina men’s tennis team wrapped up a successful showing at the ITA Carolina Regionals today. As the final Gamecocks in the competition, Wood Benton and Yancy Dennis competed in the quarterfinals of the doubles bracket, falling to the No. 14 doubles team in the nation.
Benton and Dennis advanced to the quarterfinals after defeating Sam Edwards and Beau Pelltier of Clemson 5-7, 7-5, 1-0 (2) in the third round of the doubles competition. However, the Gamecock duo was unable to advance to the semifinals after falling 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (7) to NC State’s Alexis Galarneau and Michael Ogden, who are ranked No. 14 in the ITA preseason doubles rankings.
The Gamecocks had a strong start in the singles competition, sending four of six student-athletes through into the fourth round of competition. To reach the round of 16, the Gamecocks went undefeated against Duke in the round of 32, with both Paul Jubb and Thomas Mayronne taking down ranked opponents.
Mayronne boasted South Carolina’s best record in the singles bracket, recording four wins before being forced to withdraw from the semifinals due to injury.
South Carolina men’s tennis will be back in action on Fri., Oct. 27, when several Gamecocks will compete in the ITF Futures event in Birmingham, Ala.
