CARMEL, Ind.. — South Carolina fired one of the best rounds in the field Tuesday on a windy final day at the 2017 Crooked Stick Invitational to finish fifth. The Gamecocks shot 290 (+4) in round three and rose two spots up the leaderboard. Four players finished in the top-25 for Carolina, led by All-American Keenan Huskey’s T-10th finish.

Huskey shot a 1-over 73 on Tuesday afternoon to finish the tournament at 1-over par. sits in 11th place at even par. He had four birdies on the day, carding red numbers on three of his last five holes. The Greenville, S.C., native, bounced back from a 3-over 39 on his front nine and shot a 2-under 34 on his way into the clubhouse. Huskey, who led the team in top-10 finishes a season ago with six, logged his first of 2017-18 today and the 12th of his career.

For the second consecutive round, junior All-SEC player Scott Stevens carded the low score of the day for the Gamecocks. He shot an even par 72 thanks to a team-high six birdies. The Chattanooga, Tenn., native, finished T-19th at 3-over par. He shot 69 (-3) on Saturday and was one of 11 players in the entire field to card a round in the 60s.

Sophomore Caleb Proveaux recorded his first career top-20 finish as he T-19th with Stevens at 3-over. The Lexington, S.C., native shot 74 (+2) in the final round and tallied three birdies, giving him 10 for the tournament. He was one of 18 players to tally 10-plus red numbers on his scorecard at Crooked Stick.

Junior Will Miles shot 1-over in the final round to finish T-23rd at 5-over for the tournament. The Hilton Head Island, S.C., native, had three birdies Tuesday. Miles has finished in the top-25 in two of his three starts for the Gamecocks this fall. Freshmen Andrew Spiegler struggled to find his groove in the third round as he shot 86 this afternoon in just his second collegiate start.

No. 9 Kentucky, who trailed by six after the second round, rose two spots from third to take home the team title. The Wildcats shot even par for the tournament and carded a 2-over 290 in the final round tying, tying with North Florida for the lowest score of the day. The Ospreys finishes second, followed by No. 14 Illinois and Purdue, who held the 36-hole lead yesterday at 8-under, but shot 17-over in the final round to fall to fourth. Cooper Musselman of Kentucky earned medalist honors by five strokes at 6-under after carding three consecutive 70s. Just nine players in the field shot par or better.

ROUND CHANGER Scott Stevens

After shooting 78 (+6) in round one, 2017 PING All-Southeast Region pick Scott Stevens tallied his second consecutive round of par or better to finish in the top-20 individually at 3-over par for the tournament. Stevens tied for the team lead with 12 birdies in the tournament, 11 of which came in the final two rounds. The talented junior from Tennessee tallied his 16th career top-20 finish on Tuesday afternoon as he helped the team climb two spots on the leaderboard and notch a top-five finish.

Huskey, Stevens and Caleb Proveaux combined for 34 of the team’s 42 birdies at Crooked Stick, which ranked fifth in the tournament field. No. 9 Kentucky led the way with 49 red numbers.
Stevens led the team in par-3 scoring average at 3.00 (E). Huskey led the team in par-4 scoring average at 4.07 (+2) and par-5 scoring average at 4.58 (-5).
Huskey and Will Miles were two of just 10 players in the tournament field to log an eagle.

UP NEXT

The Gamecocks have a short week before returning to play as they host the 2017 Camden Collegiate Invitational at Camden Country Club for the fourth consecutive season next weekend. The two-day event begins on Saturday morning in Camden, S.C. as the 18-team field will play 36 holes on day one. Carolina will be gunning for its third title in four years at the event, which was established in the fall of 2014.
