Jackie Schaefer Named To SEC Community Service Team

Nov. 2, 2017

COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina freshman defender Jackie Schaefer has been named to the 2017 SEC Community Service Team, the league announced Thursday afternoon.

Schaefer, who has started 15 of Carolina’s 18 matches this season, has shown a passion for helping out in the community during her first year with the Gamecocks. She has taken part in a variety of events and found ways to help people of all ages.

The Atlantic Beach, Fla., native has participated in two Relay For Life events in 2017, providing games and activities on both occasions. Schaefer helped grow the game of soccer throughout the year by volunteering at multiple camps for Carolina, and she helped prepare food and drinks for the less fortunate at the St. Francis Soup Kitchen in March.

The newcomer has also served as a role model at local elementary schools, where she assisted with physical education classes and spent time in the classroom talking about the importance of reading.

On the field, Schaefer has played an integral role for a back line that has helped the Gamecocks post 12 shutouts this season. Carolina’s 0.49 goals against average leads the SEC and ranks 11th among NCAA Division I schools. Schaefer was one of three Gamecock newcomers to be named to the SEC All-Freshman Team this past weekend.

No. 3 Carolina (15-2-1) will learn its NCAA Tournament first-round opponent on Mon., Nov. 6, during the NCAA Women’s Soccer Selection Show (4:30 p.m. ET).
