Men’s Golf at Ka’anapali Collegiate Classic
LAHAINA, Hawaii — South Carolina played lights out golf in the opening round of the 2017 Ka’anapali Collegiate Classic on Friday afternoon in Hawaii. The Gamecocks shot 268 (-16) and are tied for second with No. 12 LSU. All four counting scores in the lineup were under-par, led by junior Scott Stevens‘ 65.
Stevens matched a career 18-hole low with his 6-under round. He’s in 5th place thanks to seven birdies and just one bogey in his opening 18 holes. Fellow junior Will Miles, who has come on strong for Carolina this fall, carded an opening round 66 (-5), matching a career 18-hole low. The Hilton Head Island, S.C., native, posted three birdies and a pair of eagles in round one.
Senior All-American Keenan Huskey was outstanding as well on day one, shooting a 4-under 67. He’s T-12th after posting four birdies and just one bogey in the first round. Sophomore Jamie Wilson was rock solid as well, carding a 1-under round of 70. Wilson had three birdies and an eagle on the 485-yard par-5 ninth hole. Sophomore Caleb Proveaux shot an opening round 72 (+1) on Saturday. He currently sits T-65th heading into round two.
No. 15 California shot 266 to jump out to the first round lead at 18-under par. No. 18 Kent State (-12) and West Virginia (-10) are in third and fourth respectively to round out the top-five in the team race. Drew McCullough of Wyoming is the individual leader at 8-under par after shooting a sizzling opening round 63.

“We played really well today, and I was impressed with how our guys finished strong on a tough stretch of the golf course. The wind didn’t kick up until the last few holes, and our guys took advantage of some pretty nice scoring conditions early on.”
ROUND CHANGER Will Miles
Miles was outstanding on day one in Hawaii matching his career 18-hole low with his opening round 66. He had just one bogey, a double on the par-4 14th hole. The Hilton Head Island, S.C., native went off on the front nine, shooting a 6-under 31 with two birdies and a pair of eagles. Miles shot five-under on the courses three par-5 holes (all on the front nine) in round one.
NOTABLE
- South Carolina had 55 pars, 21 birdies and led the field with three eagles in the opening round.
- Will Miles leads the field in par-5 scoring average at 3.33 (-5).
- Scott Stevens is tied for fourth in the field in par-4 scoring average at 3.73 (-3).
- The Gamecocks were just three shots off tying the school record for 18-hole low as a team. Carolina set the program record at the 2015 Camden Collegiate Invitational with a 265 in the second round en route to the team title at the event.
UP NEXT
It’s another shotgun start for the field at 2:30 p.m. ET tomorrow in Hawaii. Carolina will be paired with three ranked teams in the second round: No. 12 LSU, No. 15 California and No. 18 Kent State.
