Jan. 30, 2018
COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina senior forward A’ja Wilson was named Citizen Naismith and SEC Player of the Week, the organizations announced today. Wilson helped the Gamecocks to a pair of SEC wins last week, shaping all aspects of the games with 21. 0 points, 14.0 rebounds and 5.5 blocks per game.
In South Carolina’s win over Arkansas, Wilson became just the second Gamecock all-time to amass 2,000 career points and 1,000 career rebounds, eclipsing the rebounding mark in the third quarter, just two games after she netted her 2,000th point against Auburn (Jan. 11). She finished the Razorback win with 27 points, which also gave her the school record for career points in SEC play, 13 rebounds and seven blocks. Against No. 11/11 Missouri on Sunday, Wilson delivered what her team needed most in each quarter. She opened with eight points in the first quarter, posted six rebounds and three blocks in the third quarter when the Gamecocks took a four-point lead, and closed the game with six points and five rebounds in the fourth quarter to close out the victory.
Putting together her most dominant season in her final college campaign, Wilson is seventh in the nation with 23.1 points per game, 15th with 11.2 rebounds per game and fourth with 3.6 blocks per game. She has 11 20-point games in her 19 outings this season, including four of her seven SEC games. Her .571 field goal percentage is 29th in the nation, and she is sixth with 14 double-doubles.
The Gamecocks continue their three-game homestand on Thursday, stepping out of conference action to host No. 1/1 UConn at 7 p.m. at Colonial Life Arena. A limited number of single-game tickets remain for the contest, which can be purchased by calling the South Carolina Athletics Ticket Office at 1-800-4SC-FANS (472-3267) or online at GamecocksOnline.com.
