Davies Earns SEC Freshman of the Week Honors
Feb. 7, 2018
COLUMBIA, S.C. — For the first time in her collegiate tennis career, South Carolina freshman Megan Davies was named the SEC Freshman of the Week, it was announced Wednesday.
Davies recorded the first perfect sweeping singles win for South Carolina this season, defeating Constanza Gorches, 6-0, 6-0, on Thursday at the Carolina Tennis Center. The win marked her second straight singles victory over Gorches and her third straight singles win in 2018 dual match play.
Paired in doubles with Rachel Rohrabacher, Davies also defeated Ally Miller-Krasilnikov and Tate Schroeder, 6-2, in Thursday’s match. Both of Davies’ wins helped South Carolina cruise to a 4-0 sweep over Clemson, earning a Palmetto Series point and extending its win streak over the Tigers to four straight matches.
“I’m very happy for Megan to be honored at the SEC level,” head coach Kevin Epley said. “I am sure this is the first of many SEC accolades she’ll collect in the years to come. She has really come on strong in the last few weeks.”
Davies’ sole singles loss of the season came against UCF’s Rebeka Stolmar on Jan. 19 at the No. 4 spot in the lineup. Since the loss, the freshman is undefeated at the No. 5 lineup spot.
The Wolverhampton, England native leads the Gamecocks with a team-high 18 wins for fall and spring play in 2017-18. At 18-4 in 2017-18, Davies’ 81.8 win percentage this season in singles is tied for 10th on the single season list with Brigit Folland (minimum 20 matches). Davies is the first Gamecock to earn a weekly award from the SEC this season.
