Gamecocks fall to No. 20 Vanderbilt

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — No. 27 South Carolina (12-5, 2-2 SEC) men’s tennis fell in its first of two weekend SEC road matches on Friday night, losing 5-2 at 20th-ranked Vanderbilt.

The Gamecocks dropped the doubles point for a third-straight match and ceded up the first three singles before notching wins from Paul Jubb and Harrison O’Keefe to close the night.

DOUBLES

The Gamecocks’ 34th-ranked doubles pair, Gabriel Friedrich and Yancy Dennis, were in a tight battle with No. 57 Cameron Klinger and Billy Rowe when play was suspended as the Commodores earned the team point with wins in the Nos. 2 and 3 doubles pairs.

SINGLES

Vanderbilt clinched the team win after securing the first three singles wins to take a 4-0 lead in the match.

Paul Jubb picked up his fifth win in six matches with a 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 comeback win over No. 79 Daniel Valent, while Harrison O’Keefe won his third-straight singles contest with a 7-6, 2-6, 1-0 (4) win over Billy Rowe.

  • No. 27 South Carolina will face No. 21 Kentucky on Sunday afternoon, its third-straight ranked opponent and sixth top-25 opponent this season.
  • Gabriel Friedrich and Yancy Dennis, the nation’s 34th-ranked doubles pair, are still 7-2 on the season and have played from the Gamecocks’ No. 1 doubles position in each match so far during SEC play.
  • Harrison O’Keefe improved his overall record to 8-6 and 4-1 in SEC play with his third-straight singles victory.
  • Paul Jubb picked up his fourth ranked singles win of the season and has now won five of his last six matchups overall.
