COLUMBIA, S.C. — Three members of the South Carolina women’s tennis team were named to the first and second All-SEC teams, the league announced Wednesday.
No. 33 Hadley Berg and No. 60 Ingrid Gamarra Martins were named to the All-SEC first team and Mia Horvit was named to the All-SEC second team. This year marks the first time in program history multiple Gamecocks have received first-team All-SEC recognition.
Berg went 11-6 in singles and 12-5 in doubles in 2018 dual match play. She was 7-3 in SEC singles play and 6-2 in SEC doubles play at No. 1 doubles. The senior was named the SEC Player of the Week on March 7 after she defeated SEC Player of the Year Arianne Hartono at No. 7 Ole Miss in straight sets. Berg went undefeated at No. 1 singles at 4-0 and clinched two matches for team. The first-team All-SEC selection marks the first of her career.
Gamarra Martins went 11-4 in regular season singles play and 5-3 in SEC singles play, while primarily playing at the No. 1 lineup spot. She earned the highest-ranked singles win in South Carolina program history on the road in straight sets against Georgia’s No. 2 Katarina Jokic, 6-3, 6-1.
The junior clinched a team-high five matches for South Carolina, including its win over No. 11 Texas at the ITA Indoor National Championships with a win over No. 64 Petra Granic. She owns team-high .800 win percentage in SEC doubles play.
The award marks the second league honor for Gamarra Martins, who was named to the All-SEC Freshman team in 2016. It is her first selection on the All-SEC first team.
Berg and Gamarra Martins are the sixth and seventh players in school history to achieve first-team All-SEC honors, joining Elixane Lechemia (2014), Anya Morgina (2011), Gira Schofield (2007), Lynn-Yin Tan (1999) and Ana Marija Zubori (2009-10).
For the second straight season, Horvit was named to the All-SEC second team. The All-American went 10-5 in 2018 dual match singles play with a 6-2 record in league play. Primarily playing at No. 2 and No. 3 singles, Horvit clinched three matches for the Gamecocks, including their 4-1 win at No. 15 Auburn. All 10 of Horvit’s wins this dual match season were in straight sets. Horvit only played in top half of the lineup, going 4-2 at No. 2 and 6-1 at No. 3. She owns team-high .800 winning percentage in SEC doubles play.
This award marks the third SEC yearly award for Horvit, who was named to the All-Freshman team last season.
Three All-SEC members ties the school record for most in a single season. The last time it happened was in 2008 when Gira Schofield, Natasa Vuckovic and Ana Marija Zubori all received second-team recognition. The same trio was honored in 2007 as well with Schofield being named to the first team. Helen Crook, Victoria Davies and Heather Greene were the first Gamecock trio in 1994 with Greene earning an at-large selection to the All-SEC Singles Second Team, and Crook and Davies doing likewise for the All-SEC Doubles Second Team.
