Outdoor Meet #8 — 124th Penn Relays
PHILADELPHIA – Lissa Labiche brought home her first career Penn Relays championship Saturday as the University of South Carolina track & field team wrapped up its weekend at Franklin Field. Labiche hit a season best to take home the championship high jump title, while the Carolina women’s 4x400m relay team also broke new ground as the meet came to a close.
Labiche joined Yann Randrianasolo (men’s championship long jump) as individual winners this season at Penn Relays, and the women’s 4×4 relay crossed the line first in the college final. Overall, the Gamecocks netted nine podium finishes for the week.
Labiche had her best day of the 2018 outdoor season, winning the high jump championship as the only competitor to clear 5-11 ½, which she easily passed on her first attempt. The effort ranks second in South Carolina history, and it’s the 10th-best mark in the NCAA this season.
Josh Awotunde threw a season best Saturday in the championship discus. In his final Penn Relays performance as a Gamecock, Awotunde finished fourth with a mark of 185-2. That ranks 28th in the nation so far this year.
Armand Woodley also posted his best mark of the year to date Saturday, and he finished third in the championship flight of the pole vault. The junior cleared 17-0 ¾, which ranks 43rd on this year’s NCAA leaderboard.
Two Gamecocks ran collegiate bests Saturday in the 100mH and made new entries into the program’s all-time top-10. Milan Parks dropped her PR for the fifth time this season, grabbing the bronze with a mark of 13.24. Caitlyn Little was right behind her, placing fourth with a mark of 13.27. Parks now ranks eighth in program history and 33rd nationally this season. Little is ninth on the school leaderboard and 36th in the nation.
The Gamecocks ended the day with a victory in the college flight of the women’s 4x400m relay. Stephanie Davis, Precious Holmes, Tatyana Mills and Briana Haith sped to a time of 3:37.30, a season-best mark that puts Carolina inside of the national top-50.
FROM THE COACH
“We’re proud of our kids. They had a good meet. It was a great day to be here at Penn Relays, with 47,000 people cheering, live TV and the USA vs. the World events. Lissa did a wonderful job. So did Josh down in the discus today. Armand came through; Josh came through, so it was a great day for us today. We keep seeing more things. Our kids are happy kids; they had a great experience, and this (meet) is a part of track & field. This right here is a passage.”- Head Coach Curtis Frye
